NJC suspends 7 judges arrested for alleged corruption

Premium Times reports that the NJC’s decision came after its seventh meeting between Wednesday, November 2 and Thursday, November 3, 2016.

A communique the body issued at the end of the meeting, and signed by NJC’s director of information, Soji Oye, reportedly said the body took the decision to avoid allowing persons under investigation to to partake in presiding over judicial matters while their cases are still being looked into.

There had been a mass outcry for the judges, arrested during a sting operation on October 7, to be suspended or even fired but the NJC continued to defend them.

According to the NJC, even though the Department of State Services maintained that the judges were corrupt and funds were found in their houses, there were no substantial evidence to nail them.

The NJC, an umbrella body for the judges in the country, had reportedly first said the affected judges voluntarily stepped down from court sittings, according to the report.
