House of Reps threaten to move against Adeosun, Emefiele
The House of Representatives has threatened to apply the full weight of the law on the finance minister, Kemi Adeosun, director general debt management office, (DM0) Abraham Nwankwo and the Governor of the central bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele for failing to appear before its adhoc committee.
According to Vanguard, the House, through its adhoc committee on the disbursement and usage of the bailout fund on Thursday, October 2, also criticised the director general of the debt management office (DMO) for the treating the issue with levity.
Chairman of the committee, Rep Ibrahim Sadiq, slammed the trio for refusing to appear before his investigative committee to give out information on how the N600 billion bail-out fund was disbursed.
He described the conduct of the officials as an affront on the institution of the national assembly empowered by sections 88,89 of the 1999 constitution as amended to probe the usage of monies disbursed from the federation account.
He further claimed that information contained in the documents earlier made available to the committee by officials of the DMO, CBN, and the finance ministry was misleading.
Similarly, a member of the committee, Rep Karibi Sunday, accused the trio of taking sides with 27 state governors who were accused of mismanaging the bail out fund meant for the payment of workers salaries and retirement benefits.
Karibi who initiated the probe said the trio had violated the freedom of information Act (FOI) by their alleged conduct.
On his part, Rep Archibong Okon, from Akwa Ibom said the refusal by the trio to provide revealing documents on the bail out fund speaks volume of their level of incompetence.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s minister of transportation Minister, Rotimi Amaechi is to appear before the House of Representatives committee on public accounts on a date yet to be communicated.
The minister is expected to appear before the committee and explain the rationale behind an alleged authorization of N25.250 million as donations in 2008 without appropriation.
According to the deputy chairman of the committee, Ibrahim Baba, Amaechi is to appear with the ministry’s budgetary appropriations for 2008 to determine whether there were provisions for the said donations in it or not.
